Ward fires Uley to glory! By winning the SDCA knockout Plate last friday at Frocester CC, Uley CC won its first trophy in its 100 year history. In front of a large crowd Uley beat Hardwick 1sts by 7 wickets in a close game played in a good spirit. Batting first Hardwick set off well with Rouse (24) and Leese (38) both making good starts. But with Williams (5-0-31-1) and Tutton (5-0-37-1) both bowling economically, young bowling star Jacob Opher (5-0-37-3) and wiley spin veteran Fisher (5-0-37-2) came on to take wickets at crucial times to restrict Hardwick to 145 -8 from their 20 overs. In reply for Uley, after Tim Griffiths (4) fell early run out, man of the match Ben Ward (55) and home grown talent Richard Burroughs (39) displayed both sensible and destructive hitting to put Uley within touching distance of that long awaited trophy. But with 29 still needed from the last 5 overs it required a mixture of big hitting from Steve Kirk (27 no) and calm batting from Mike Pain (8 no) to see Uley home with 3 balls to spare. In a fitting tribute captain Simon Opher invited Wayne Fisher who has played for Uley for 30 years to lift the trophy. With its current blend of youth, experience, skill and motivational captaincy Uley Cricket Club certainly has a bright future.
